Hi Reader! 250 years ago, a document was signed that declared 13 British colonies were breaking up with England. Those words became facts. Is your message as clear as the Declaration of Independence? Words, based on an idea and beliefs, created the United States of America. Not logos. Not branding. Not websites Not products and services. Words. The Declaration of Independence was written to describe something new, the same way you declared your independence from employment to create your business. You saw people struggling with a problem. You knew you could help them. You created an entity and a framework to support that. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲. The Declaration of Independence was very clear and specific about what it was creating and why. If you want to be hired and get referrals, the words you use must be clear. If people can't understand how you help them, you can't get hired or get referrals. Not a clever sentence. Not a polished tagline. ONE truthful, short sentence. Just like the United States of America, "Maggy Sterner, Brand Message Strategist" began as an idea because I saw people struggling to describe what they do. They don't need a killer tagline. They need ONE sentence that clearly expresses one self-evident truth that anyone can understand. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗮 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼? Hiya Reader! Why does your business exist? What is its purpose? Yeah, I know - it's a deep question and the one we never think to answer when we launch ourselves into the world. When you know the answer, you'll be <this much> closer to understanding why someone should hire you, join your class, or attend your webinar.I spent a couple of hours with a client yesterday answering ONE question: Why does her program exist? Yes, it takes time - and the willingness to really dig into the what-ness of...
I don't know if you do this, Reader, but I just landed on a ton of LinkedIn profiles where I could NOT tell what the person did because they used cute, incomprehensible words to describe it. If I'm searching for someone who does what you do because I need to hire them or I have a client I could refer to them, Ima use plain old simple words. Something I'll never search for: a chief anything, storytelling goddess, website magician, marketing ninja, or sales guru. If I can't understand what you...
Hi Reader! I just came from a networking event and someone mentioned they were working with a coach on their "story." I was like, "uh oh."Then she said, "I want to serve anyone" and "it really doesn't matter what their business is."😳 At the end of our chat, I asked her how I could help her and she said, "I'm offering a group program in the fall so if you hear of anyone who needs my help, send them to me."But I can't because I don't know who's the right audience for her. It all starts with...
