🤯 Why does your business exist?

Hiya Reader!

Why does your business exist? What is its purpose? Yeah, I know - it's a deep question and the one we never think to answer when we launch ourselves into the world.

When you know the answer, you'll be

I spent a couple of hours with a client yesterday answering ONE question: Why does her program exist? Yes, it takes time - and the willingness to really dig into the what-ness of the thing.

In all my years working with people to find words to describe what they do, I've learned that this statement, "

Here's what else: It's always ONE thing. Not 20 things. Not, "and I also ...," or "here are my certifications" or (god help us) "mission-driven" something.

We exist to do ONE thing that makes a difference for our clients, in our jobs, and I daresay, just walking around in our lives.

We're all known for ONE core thing.

I read a profile of the Turkish artist Alev Ebüzziya Siesbye in The New Yorker this morning. It said:

"She has dedicated her career to the pursuit of a single shape, finding within it new forms and possibilities. In the course of decades and through thousands of repetitions, she has whittled down her distinctive stoneware bown to its very essence: a container of space."

That is the IS-ness of what she does. Many things can live under ONE umbrella.

So, dear colleagues: What is the IS-ness of what you do?

I'll go first: I exist to help people be heard and understood so the people who need them most can find them and hire them.

Why does your business exist? It's a short, declarative sentence.

If that question stumps you,
let's talk.

I don't know if you do this, Reader, but I just landed on a ton of LinkedIn profiles where I could NOT tell what the person did because they used cute, incomprehensible words to describe it. If I'm searching for someone who does what you do because I need to hire them or I have a client I could refer to them, Ima use plain old simple words. Something I'll never search for: a chief anything, storytelling goddess, website magician, marketing ninja, or sales guru. If I can't understand what you...

Stop telling your brand story and start talking about how you help people solve a problem.

Hi Reader! I just came from a networking event and someone mentioned they were working with a coach on their "story." I was like, "uh oh."Then she said, "I want to serve anyone" and "it really doesn't matter what their business is."😳 At the end of our chat, I asked her how I could help her and she said, "I'm offering a group program in the fall so if you hear of anyone who needs my help, send them to me."But I can't because I don't know who's the right audience for her. It all starts with...

Hi Reader Here's a situation I hear about a lot and a common question I get asked by multitalented folks (or, speaking for myself, "I'm bored! Next!")."I work with different companies across different industries. It's hard to think of one sentence that works for everyone. How do I find only one way to say it?" Maybe you do need more than one pitch for different audiences, but whatever you say almost always wraps around what I call the "Golden Thread" that runs through it. I’ve done a lot of...
